Sir Raphael (Ray) West Cilento

Acknowledgements:
We are most grateful to Dr. Tony Swain who allowed us to publish his talk to the Society about Sir Raphael Cilento.

Tony graduated MB BS from the University of Sydney sponsored by the RAN, and completed a four years Short Service Commission as Surgeon Lt. Commander. He moved to Adelaide and specialised in Anaesthesia. He worked in private practice and as a Visiting Medical Officer in Public Hospitals until 2007.

He was a Clinical Surveyor for the Australian Council of Health Care Standards until 2012, and in 2014 co-authored with COL Michael Jelly RFD, COL Annette Summers AO RFD and Group Captain Christopher Verco RFD a book entitled "Blood, Sweat and Fears" about South Australian students and graduates who served in WW1.

While gathering the information for the book, he found that Sir Raphael West Cilento, a notable medical practitioner, tropical medicine expert, and public servant, was born in Jamestown in South Australia. He also noted that Cilento was prevented from contributing to WW2 (see Australian Dictionary of Biography). Tony's presentation provides important additional information about Sir Raphael, with some relevant notes in the "Notes" view.
